Tails the Fox

After making Sonic and Shadow, I found out that Colleen O'Shaughnessey (the voice actress for Miles "Tails" Prower in the Sonic movies) is attending the retro gaming convention I'm attending in July. So, naturally, I had to crochet Tails next!

Materials:

WW (#4) yarn in yellow, white, red, and a bit of black
Optional: fuzzy white yarn to make the whiskers, chest fluff, and tail slightly fluffy. This yarn will be worked in tandem with the white WW yarn. Note: I didn't use fuzzy yarn until the tail, so pictures do not reflect usage of fuzzy yarn.
Size F (#5 or 3.75 mm) crochet hook
 Yarn Needle
Polyester fiberfill (pillows work just as well!)
 Scissors
Felt sheets in white and black (optional pink for the mouth)

Notes:

  • Gauge isn't that important, so long as your stitches are tight and the stuffing won't show or fall out. You can use a different yarn and hook if so desired, just make sure you use a good combination that won't leave gappy holes.
  • The (parentheses) at the end of each Rnd/Row indicate the number of stitches at the end of that Rnd/Row.
  • I work in continuous rounds (aka spiral rounds), but if you prefer to join at the end of each round that's fine. I also decrease in front loops only because I've heard that it makes the decrease stitch less visible.
  • If you don't know what a Magic Ring is don't panic! It's also called Magic Loop or Magic Circle. Here's an alternative: If the pattern says 6 sc in Magic Ring you can ch 2 and 6 sc in 2nd ch from hook and join stitches. I prefer working with a Magic Ring because you can pull it as tight as you want so that the stuffing won't show. Just use whatever you feel most comfortable using.

(US) Terminology Key
  • ch = chain (make a slip knot and then make the foundation chain)
  • st = stitch
  • sl st = slip stitch
  • SC = single crochet
  • dec = decrease (2 sc together)
  • inc = increase (2 sc in 1 st)
  • MR = Magic Ring (see notes for instructions)
  • around = repeat steps until you reach the last stitch of the round
  • hdc = half double crochet
  • hdc inc = two hdc in 1 stitch
  • hdc dec = yarn over, pull yarn through 2 stitches (4 loops on hook), then yarn over and pull through all 4 loops

Head (using yellow):
1: 6 sc in MR (6)
2: inc in each st (12)
3: 1 sc, inc around (18)
4: 2 sc, inc around (24)
5: 3 sc, inc around (30)
6 - 8: sc in each around (30)
9: sc 3, dec around (24)
10 - 13: sc in each around (24)
14: 2 sc, dec (18)
15: 1 sc, dec (12)
16: dec in each (6)
F/O and weave in tail end.

Mouth (using white):
Note: If using fuzzy yarn, now is the time to use it.
1: ch 10, sc in 2nd ch from hook & next 8 stitches (9)
2: hdc inc, hdc in next 7, hdc inc (11)
3: sc in each (11)
4: (hdc dec) x2, hdc in 3, (hdc dec) x2 (7)
We're gonna start sc around the entire piece now.
5: *ch 4, sc in 2nd ch from hook and remaining 2 sts, sc in base of mouth* Repeat from * to * 3 times. sc in 7 sts. Repeate from * to * 4 times. sc in 6. Sc in next row down (making a circle). Should have roughly 10 stitches now in a circle. This will make the "snout" (see picture for reference).
6: sc in 3, dec over 5 stitches (5)
Change to black
7: sc in each (5)
F/O black, weave in end. F/O white with long tail for sewing. When sewing mouth to head, don't sew chained "whiskers" down, only the main mouth part.

Cut eyes out of white and black felt, using pictures as reference. Embroider smile with black yarn (or, alternatively, use some pink felt to make an open mouth).

Top hair (using yellow):
Using picture as reference, attach yellow yarn to the top of the forehead. *Ch 5, sc in 2nd ch from hook and remaining 3 sts, sl st into next row down*. Repeat from * to * twice, making 3 strands of "hair". F/O and weave in ends.

Ears (make 2 using yellow):
1: 5 sc in MR (5)
2: 1sc, inc, 1 sc, inc, inc (8)
3: Change color to white, sc in one, change color to yellow, sc in each around (8)
4: change color to white, 1 sc, inc, change color to yellow, *1 sc, inc* around (12)
5: change to white, sc in 4, change to yellow, sc in 8 (12)
6: change to white, sc in 5, change to yellow, sc in 7 (12)
7: change color to white, 3 sc, inc, 1 sc, change color to yellow, 2 sc, inc, *3 sc, inc* around (15)
8: change color to white, sc in 6, change color to yellow, sc in 9 (15)
F/O leaving long enough tails for sewing.

Sew ears to head, curving while sewing to make them slightly rounded. Do not stuff.

Feet (make 2, using red):
1: 5 in MR (5)
2: inc (10)
3: in BLO, sc in each (10)
4: (dec) x2, sc in remaining stitches (8)
Change color to white
5: in FLO, 1 sc, inc around (12)
6: sc in each around (12)
F/O white.
7: Attach yellow to back loops of round 5.
8 - 11: sc in each around (8)
F/O the first leg.

Second leg becoming Body:
Make sure the loop on your hook is in a stitch to the side of the foot/leg, as you'll be working the crotch area next. Please be aware, these color changes will vary depending on your stitch placement. White is the belly.
12: ch 1, sc in first leg on side, sc around 7, sc in back of ch, sc in 8 leg stitches (18)
13: inc on hip stitches, otherwise sc around (20)
14: sc in 8, chance to white, sc 2, inc in next 3, sc 2, change to yellow, sc in 5 (23)
15 - 16: sc in 7, change to white, sc in 10, change to yellow, sc in 6 (23)
17: sc in 8, change to white, sc in 9, change to yellow, sc in 6 (23)
18 - 20: sc in 8, change to white, sc in 8, change to yellow, sc in 7 (23)
21: using only yellow, sc in 2, dec (17)
22: sc in 1, dec (11)
F/O leaving long enough tail for sewing.

Shoe points (make 2, using white):
1: 4 in MR (4)
2: sc 1, inc around (6)
3: sc 1, inc (9)
F/O and sew to tip of red shoe.

Chest fluff (using white):
Note: If using fuzzy yarn, now is the time to use it.
Attach white yarn to 3rd row of white on the edge where white and yellow meet on the belly (see pictures for reference). *Ch 3, sc in 2nd ch from hook and remaining 2, sc to body*. Repeat from * to * twice. F/O and repeat on other side of belly.

9: (y) sc in 1, (w) sc in 3, (y) sc in 1, (w) sc in 7, (y) sc in 1, (w) sc in 5. (18)
10: (y) sc in 2, (w) sc in 2, (y) sc in 1, (w) sc in 3, (y) sc in 1, (w) sc in 3, (y) sc in 2, (w) sc in 4. (18)
11: (y) sc in 2, (w) sc in 1, (y) sc in 3, (w) sc in 2, (y) sc in 2, (w) sc in 2, (y) sc in 2, (w) sc in 1, (y) sc in 1, (w) sc in 2. (18)
